Opening Match Of Tour (N.Z Press Association—. Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, May 1 The West Indies experienced varying fortunes on the opening day of its tour today against Worcestershire, at one time in the afternoon losing five wickets foi 96 runs, but pulling up to finish with 290 for nine. Dull weather greeted the tourists for their irst official match. Chief architect ct the downfall was Bob Berry, the county’s leftarm spinner, who finished the day with six wickets ror 105 runs. The best of the West Indies batsmen was Collie Smith, who coming in fifth wicket down, played a fine innings of 68, including three sixes and seven fours. Ganteaume and Asgarali gave the tourists a good start, putting on 11 in 100 minutes for the first wicket Berry, whose only two England appearances were against the West Indies in 1950, troubled all the batsmen. He forced Ganteaume to play on and seriously bothered '’Torrell, whom he nearly caught and bowled at eight. Later, Valentine became Berry’s five hundredth victim in first-class cricket. Scores:—
