LEW HOAD BEATS C. PARKER

Play In Bournemouth Tournament

(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) BOURNEMOUTH, May 1 Lew Hoad (Australia) was in ruthless form today when he beat the New Zealand Davis Cup player, C Parker. 6-2, 60, 6-4, in the third round of the men’s singles in the British hard court tennis championships at Bournemouth. Hoad's win took very little out of him, and, but for a fall in the third set, the match would have been without incident. Play was held up for two minutes, but the fall did not appear to harm Hoad’s injured right arm. Hoad was in a completely ruthless mood throughout, and from 1-2 in the first set he took 13 successive games. In a run of five games in ihe opening set he dropped onlv two points. It was the tennis of a champion, and a final with Jaroslav Drobny seems a certainty. Drobny made equally easy work of his match with the South African, Guy Koenig, losing only three games The Australian, Jack Arkinstall's, all-round superiority and tactical experience proved too much for 23-year-old Alan Mills, a surprise winner on Tuesday against the seeded Trevor Fancutt (South Africa). Arkinstall had been affected by stiffness in his right arm, but there was no sign of it today and he won convincingly, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. The British Davis Cup “hope,” Billy Knight, qualified to meet Arkinstall at the expense of a fellow Briton, Roger Becker, 8-6, 6-3, 8Peter Nicholls (New Zealand) and Bob Bedaid (Canada) provided the surprise in the men’s doubles by beating the seeded British pair, M. Davies and W. Knight, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. 6-4. Lew Gerrard, a New Zealand Davis Cup candidate, went down to Bob Wilson, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Other results:— Women’s Doubles First Round.—Miss R. M.
