WORK ON LAKE HAWEA EARTH DAM.—A truck and a two-and-a-half cubic yard shovel at work in an area where a steep bluff on the lake shore is being cut back to an alignment which will make a beach for the new lake level. About 1100 cubic yards of earth have been taken so far for placing in the massive earth dam, which is part of the Ministry of Works hydro-control project to raise the level of Lake Hawea. Enough water will be stored for the generators at Roxburgh to cover 1,720,000 acres a foot deep. Eventually, about 500,000 cubic yards of material will be selected, spread and compacted.
