OPPOSITION TO BOMB TESTS

Representations To Mr Holland

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2.

Fewer than 100 communications had been addressed to him about banning nuclear weapon tests, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) this evening.

The Prime Minister had been asked for his comment on a telegram sent to him today by the Dean of Hamilton (the Very Rev. C. W. Chandler) urging that bomb tests should cease. Mr Holland sai<| he had not yet seen the telegram.

The replies sent by Mr Holland to communications so far merely acknowledge receipt and say that the views have been noted. With each reply Mr Holland sends a copy of the statement he made on April 10In this Mr Holland said there was a strong case for the major Powers to come together to reach a basis for the limitation of nuclear tests. He added that he did not think any useful purpose would be served by New Zealand initiating a protest in the United Nations. If Britain were to call a halt now it would leave her uncertain whether she had adequate means of retaliation in nuclear warfare.
