BUILDINGS OF UNIVERSITY
Hints On Future Use
A hint that the present buildings of Canterbury University College may be used for adult education, for expanded services to extra-mural students, and for short courses, when the university moves to Riccarton was given by the Rector (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) last evening in a public address. With the new School of Art almost completed, tenders to be called for the new School of Engineering about next June, and hopes for sketch plans of a new science building early in 1958, the public might well ask what would happen to the buildings on the city site, he said.
“I can’t give an official answer to that question,” Dr. Llewellyn said, “but I would remind you that the college is responsible for adult education and that it controls adult education in the province through the Regional Council. It has for many years provided accommodation for the W.E.A., with whom it has had a long association. Whatever developments there are in adult education generally, I am sure the college will always be concerned with them and that metropolitan classes will grow and become more diversified as time goes on. Extra-mural Students
“No-one can predict developments in the requirements of parttime students, or developments in diploma or other non-degree technical classes. It is possible that adequate provision will have to be made for a considerable staff to look after extra-mural students, and possibly for vacation and other short courses for these students,” Dr. Llewellyn said. “Some of the buildings on the present site have only a limited life: the east block is heavily infested with dry rot; others have been altered to such an extent that they are now nothing better than rabbit warrens. “But even if some of the buildings are not wholly satisfactory for the future, there is no doubt in my mind that the site is and will remain invaluable for educational and most probably for university educational purposes,” said Dr. Llewellyn.
