Engines For Space Satellite
(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 30. The United States Navy today announced acceptance of the big first-stage rocket engine for the earth satellite launching vehicle. It said earlier defects in the engine had been corrected. The engine will be flight tested within the next few months at the Air Force missile test centre. Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Navy announced last week acceptance of the second-stage power unit.
The first and second stage rockets are designed to lift the earth satellite vehicle to an altitude of 300 miles and a speed of more than 9000 miles an hour. The third stage, carrying the 211 b satellite in its nose, will boost the speed to 18.000 miles an hour and cut loose the sphere in an orbit about the earth. Two companies are now at work on the third stage rocket. The satellite is scheduled tp be launched during the International Geophysical Year, which starts on July 1 and runs for 18 months.
