POWER SUPPLY TO MUNICIPALITIES
“ 14 Being Socked By Boards” ' (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. Fourteen municipalities throughout New Zealand were being “socked” by power boards from which they bought electricity, said the retiring president of the Municipal Electric Supply Authorities’ Association (Mr J. A. Harley), at the annual conference of the association in Wellington today.
It justified the organisation staying in existence—to fight for justice and to ensure that everyone in New Zealand had the opportunity of pui chasing power at the same price, he said. Municipalities such as Wellington bought power direct from the Government at the same rates as power boards. Yet municipalities which obtained the same power through power boards paid more.
The association had been formed 21 years ago for a specific purpose—to protect municipal interests within the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association. With the powerful influence exerted by country interests, there were problems to be overcome. For some long periods the organisation had been in recess while there had been no problems, but in recent years, negotiations with power boards had made it necessary for the organisation to be revived.
