RACING Shoal And Fulgent— Double At Blenheim
Shoal and Fulgent, both Riccarton-trained gallopers, are favoured for the totalisator double, the Marlborough Cup and the Weld Memorial, on the first day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting today.
Shoal is top-weight with 9-0 in the Marlborough Cup. One of her strongest opponents will probably be Scuppered, which improved with each race at Riccarton last week, and beat all but Rhythmonic over a mile and a half in the Sockbum Handicap. The track was soft for the three days of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and the conditions showed Scuppered at her best. Shoal has done most of her racing on firm tracks this season, winning twice at Riccarton and once at Wingatui on summer tracks. Unless there is rain today horses which favour summer i tracks will have conditions to their liking. Finito, Hilili, Beau Ray and Desert Cloud have dropped out of the Marlborough Cup. The reduction in the size of the field will also help Shoal, which usually works up to speed slowly but has usually won with powerful runs from well back.
King’s Crest, a winner under high-weight conditions at the Wellington autumn meeting, is expected to be the best of the North Island horses in the cup.
Motueka Scratched Hilili and Motueka are scratchings for the Weld Memorial Handicap. The winner could still come from the top part of the handicap; Kiatoa and Fulgent Mill not go under easily to the best of the light-weights if they recapture their best form.
Kiatoa has raced with credit against some of the top-flight sprinters this .season, and was placed over six furlongs at the Wellington autumn meeting. Fulgent will be one of the smallest horses in the field, but also one of the gamest and nippiest, and his usual good beginning from No. 1 position would have him well placed all the way. Teko has done little racing on the metropolitan courses, but has shown form of some worth at provincial meetings. A firm track will brighten the prospects of this Riccarton-trained sprinter. Jolly Miller and Boneder have been scratched Tor the Waterlea Hurdles, in which Incredible, Brown Baron, and Cristatus should represent Canterbury stables with credit.
Porcelain Prince and Premier Lad have been withdrawn from the Novice Stakes No. 1, and the Riccarton-trained Heathcliffe has been scratched for the second Novice Stakes.
Form Winner Lucky Gay, a close third to Sharp and Sarcelle at Riccarton last Saturday, is the logical form runner for the Juvenile Handicap, for which Hunting Star, Las Vegas, Super View, apd Angelsey are scratchings. A field of six is expected for the Flaxbourne Hack Handicap; and lone and Royal Inca will dominate the betting Both are last-start winners, lone coming to her best form to beat the hack stayers decisively over one mile and a quarter on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Royal Inca, a four-year-old Mid-day Sun gelding from W. McEwan’s Otaki stable, was a winner under high-weight conditions at Tauherenikau on April 22. There will be nearly a capacity field for the Picton Hack Handicap, but the top-weight, Golden Warrior, will be a firm favourite, and should justify that position if he has held his form. This Someo colt showed ability to beat the hack sprinters over one mile at Tauherenikau on April 22 after being slowest away. Shahnui, lone, and Floral Crest have been scratched for the Picton Handicap. Selections:—
