GOLF Semi-Finals Reached In Women’s Tourney
The most impressive golf on the second day of the Canterbury women’s championships yesterday was played by the 17-year-old Miss B. Campbell from Takaka. She won her first and second round matches with considerable ease, and this morning will meet the accomplished Miss A. Murray in a semifinal. The other semi-finalists are Miss S. Grigg and Mrs R. G. Edward. Miss Campbell, a strong, free swinger, is a hard hitter, but it was only very occasionally that her tee shots left the line, —er fairway woods and irons were also long and accurate, and yesterday she putted much more successfully than she did in the qualifying rounds, in one of which she managed, mainly through her determination not to be short, to three-putt nine greens. Miss Campbell needs only to play short pitches properly, instead of running the ball up, to become a very fine golfer. In her afternoon match, against the Christchurch club captain, Miss E. M. B. Nutt, Miss Campbell was in particularly good form. She dropped only one stroke on the way out, and her 37 was easily the best half of the tournament so far. Eight scratch scores testified to her steadiness. Miss Grigg had a comfortable win in the morning, and in the afternoon was out in 39 to Mrs K. D. Watt’s 40, this match also providing a considerable improvement on the first day scoring. Mrs Watt staged a tremendous finish in her morning match against Miss H. Geaney. Mrs Watt was 3 down with four to play, but won at the nineteenth. She could not hold Miss Grigg in the afternoon, although Miss Grigg was not putting confidently. Miss Dalzell Loses One of last year’s semi-finalists, Miss L. Dalzell, lost a close match against Mrs Edward in the morning. Playing well from the tees, and recovering, splendidly whenever she was in trouble, Mrs Edward was 2 up at the turn. Miss Dalzell, one of the easiest swingers in the field, took one back with a birdie 3 at the twelfth, and squared the match at the fourteenth. Mrs Edward played the sixteenth well, reaching the green in regulation three,
but Miss Dalzell was in trouble most of the way and lost the hole. The seventeenth was halved, and the last hole was well played. They were both on in two, but both failed in their attempts for birdies. Mrs Edward was again playing very well when she beat Mrs A. I. Charles in the afternoon. Miss Murray, playing Miss L. Hillis, was out in 39, and 4 up, and she maintained her good form, although Miss Hillis lost no further ground.. The weather was warm and still, and the course played particularly well. Although there was a very large field, the busi-ness-like methods of most of the players prevented delays—a lesson for many of the men competing in the Easter tournament, who played every shot as if it was their last. Results were:— Championship First Round.—Miss S. Grigg beat Miss B. Langley, 4 and 3; Mrs K. D. Watt bear Miss H. Geaney, at the nineteenth; Mrs A. I. Charles beat Miss M. Kennard, 4 and 3; Mrs R. G.
