Colourful Showing Of Chrysanthemum Blooms

Gladioli, roses and autumn chrysanthemums colour the twoday Chrysanthemum Show of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, which began at the Latimer Hall, Christchurch, yesterday. A steady flow of viewers went through the show examining such different exhibits as winter decorative pieces, dried flower pictures and the featured chrysanthemums. The premier award, the blue ribbon, went to Mr L. Clark, whose incurving Duke of Kent chrysanthemum was judged a glorious bloom with its solid head, white, compact petals, and minimum eye-colour.

“The quality of the single chrysanthemums is really superb,” said the judge (Mr S. Challenger). Neither in Britain nor New Zealand had he seen such wonderful quill petal blooms. In the winter decorative class there was a break from the traditional china vase, for many exhibitors had set off their displays with bases of stone or timber. The secretary (Mr P. C. Browne) considered this the best show the society had held for some time. Entry figures were equal with last year in the main, but the vegetable section had grown from 72 to 102 exhibits. Some decorative work had been sent from Ashburton and Akaroa, which also produced sonje of the fruit shown. Results:— Premier Awards
