MR WALSH “OFF THE BEAM”

Social Credit League View

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, May 1.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Hamilton branch of the New Zealand Social Credit Political League last night, Mr JI. G. Young, deputy-leader of the league, commenting on the remarks of Mr F. P. Walsh to the Federation of Labour on the farming industries, said that Mr Walsh appeared to be “well off the beam.”

Mr Walsh’s statement that “payment to farmers out of the reserve accounts meant that the public was being imposed on, to ensure that one section of the community received an artificially high income,” was contrary to fact, as the farmers provided their own reserve.

“Mr Walsh conveniently forgets to tell his conference that the Labour Government artificially raised the costs of farming and other industries in New Zealand by 37.5 per cent, from 1935 to 1949,” said Mr Young. “In other words. Labour depreciated our £ by 7s 6d during its term of office.

“The present Government has merely continued the same policy by further increasing internal costs by about 30 per cent, over all.

“If ‘the dairy industry must come down out of the clouds,’ as Mr Walsh claims, will he be consistent and ask his conference to give a lead by asking for a reduction of wages, thus reducing costs, not only for the farmers, but all industry? “Mr Walsh is leading the workers of New Zealand up the garden path, as the course he advocates can only lead to a repetition of the 1930-35 period,” concluded Mr Young.
