BASIC DAIRY PRICE
Discussions Now In Progress
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, May 1. Discussions between Department of Agriculture officials and the Dairy Board for a new basic guaranteed price are now in progress.
The new price will operate when the new season starts on August 1. It will be the basis for calculating all future guaranteed or floor prices, which, under the Dairy Products Marketing Commission Act, passed last year, cannot fall by more than 5 per cent, in any year.
It is also laid down that the price for the first year—l9s7-58 cannot be less than 95 per cent, of the estimated cost of production. At present, butter is selling in England at about 80 per cent, of cost of production, with farmers’ losses coming from the pool account.
The new act reconstituted the Dairy Commission and also established a price-fixing authority Appointments to these bodies have not yet been made, and the fixing of the basic cost of production is now the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture
