COMMONWEALTH NAVAL TALKS

Four-Day Meeting At Greenwich

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 29. A four-day Commonwealth Naval Conference, described as the biggest since World War 11, was opened at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, today. Its main purpose is to enable the Commonwealth Chiefs of Naval Staff to attend an exercise called “Fairlead,” to study matters of common interest in naval strategy and tactics in the light of current technical developments. \ The conference is presided over by the First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten. Vice-Admiral Sir Roy R. Dowling, Chief of the Australian Naval Staff, represents Australia at the talks. So many admirals and their staffs are attending the exercise at Greenwich, the “Evening News” said, that they could not all be accommodated in the college. The Admiralty has organised “water buses” to take the senior officers from Charing Cross down the Thames to Greenwich in the morning and back to Charing Cross at night.
