Magistrate’s Court MOTOR-CYCLIST FINED, LICENCE SUSPENDED

A motor-cyclist who was stopped by a traffic officer after a 60-miles-an-hour chase. along Cashel street told the traffic officer his speed had been only 33 miles an hour, and explained that he had no horn on his machine because it had been put on another motor-cycle which was being tested for a warrant of fitness. The motor-cyclist, Norman Hughey, did not appear in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous, having insufficient lights, exceeding 40 miles an hour with a pillion passenger, failing to wear a safety helmet, and driving a vehicle not equipped with a warning device. Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., convicted him and find him a total of £l5. His driver’s licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for six months. Traffic Officer C. Wilson said that he was in a patrol car in Cashel street at 1.15 a.m. on February 24. Hughey, travelling towards Linwood avenue, passed at an estimated speed of 60 m.p.h. Witness gave chase, but at 50 m.p.h. could make no impression. Between Clive street and Nursery road Hughey was checked at 60 m.p.h. At that speed he continued over three T-intersections, one three way intersection and one four-way intersection. Fortunately for Hughey the driver of a taxi which appeared on his right at the Stanmore road heard the siren and stopped. Hughey told witness that he had been doing only 33 miles an hour. Neither Hughey nor his pillion passenger was wearing a safety helmet. Both glass and bulb were broken in the tail light, said Traffic Officer Wilson. FOUND DRUNK

Thomas John Ballantyne, aged 38, a labourer, appeared further on a charge of being found drunk in Colombo street, having had three previous convictions for drunkenness within the last six months. He was convicted and discharged. OBSCENE LANGUAGE On a charge of using obscene language in Emmett street on April 29, James Miller Connell, aged 38, an electrical serviceman, pleaded guilty. He was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence within a year if called upon, and to take out a prohibition order. For the police, Inspector C. H. Reardon said that accused was in the habit of coming home under the influence of drink and arguing and using bad language. “He tells me he has had financial troubles, but I think beer is his trouble.” REMANDED A man whose name was ordered not to be published and who was represented by Dr. A. L. Haslam, was remanded till May 7 on renewed bail on a charge of assaulting a 10-year-old girl. Edgar Lawrence Gigg, aged 44. a carpenter, was remanded to Monday on a charge of stealing a suitcase and its contents, the property of Allan Dowson, on April 9. _ _ Detective-Sergeant E. G. Ward appeared for the police. GAVE FALSE NAME Three charges against Nehemia Taurau, aged 18, led to fines totalling £ll. He was charged with having no driver’s licence, exceeding 40 miles an hour with a pillion passenger, and giving a false name when stopped by a traffic officer. * Traffic Officer R. A. Gallagher said that Taurau had been checked on Riccarton road at speeds varying from 40 to 45 miles an hour after pulling out from a line of cars. He was carrying a pillion passenger on his motor-cycle. When asked for his licence, accused produced one belonging to a man named Reminger. After the officer had checked the licence accused had admitted his real name was Taurau.

TOURIST LOSES LICENCE Pleading guilty to a charge of driving at a dangerous speed, John Garrick O’Shannessy, an Australian tourist, was fined £1 and his driving licence was suspended for 28 days. Defendant had been checked in Riccarton road at speeds ranging from 35 to 50 miles an hour, and when stopped had explained that he was late for an appointment with his girl friend, said Traffic Officer L. R. Stringer. O’Shannessy told the Magistrate that he was on holiday in New Zealand and was touring by car He realised that he was liable to have his licence suspended and that this would inconvenience him in his travels.
