NEW FREEZING WORKS
Southland Project (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. April 30. Plans are well advanced for the Alliance Freezing Company’s Underwood works, which is to be built on a 340-acre site, four and a half miles north of Invercargill. The works will be New Zealand’s first completely new freezing works in 33 years. Construction of the main freezer blocks is expected to begin within six months, as are several other ancillary works. The company expects to begin killing in 1960. The initial capacity will be 800,000 sheep a season. The works will be spread over between 40 and 50 acres and will cost between £1.500.000 and £2,000,000. There will be storage for 60 per cent, of the season’s kill. Water will be pumped from the Oreti river, about two and a half miles to the west, and will be fed into a 1.000,000-gallon reservoir. This will be Southland’s fourth freezing works. The others are ■ at Mataura, Ocean Beach, and Makarewa. The works manager, Mr J. B. ! Grant, formerly of Patea, said to- ’ day that it was expected about 5 600 men would be employed for 1 a start. There would be accoms modation provided at the works ■ for between 200 and 300 single ’ men.
