Saunter, Vivien Leigh Best In Blenheim Trials

BLENHEIM, April 30. Locally - trained horses were among the best workers at Waterlea today, when final trials were performed for the first day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting which opens on Thursday. Saunter, which is to start in the Marlborough Cup. Passchenedaele, and the maiden, Roseabelle. galloped attractively, and of the visitors, the two-year-olds Vivien Leigh, which worked with Robes, and Emulation, which worked with Beejay, did best. A large number of horses is due to arrive tomorrow and the only doubtful runners are Shahnui and Las Vegas.

Galloping took place on the outside of the course proper, which was holding after heavy rain, but improving quickly with fine weather during the morning. Saunter (Priddle) was going better than Teko (Blair), with Jesse James (Stanfield) beaten off after six furlongs in lmin 20 2-ssec. the last half-mile in 54sec. They worked early when the track was heavier. From the stalls, Vivien Leigh (Blair) was holding Robes (Mein), which ran greenly, after five furlongs in lmin Bisec, the' last three in 40 4-ssec. Vivien Leigh will be one of the favourites in the Juvenile Handicap. Also starting from the stalls, Passchenedaele (Priddle) moved off well behind Zami Lyn (Mein) and Lady Barker (Blair), but was with them into the straight and doing best at the finish of five furlongs in lmin 6sec, the last three in 38 3-ssec. • It was good work by Passchenedaele because he had the heaviest weight. From a standing start Roseabelle (Blair) began better than Harksheen (Stanfield), and though she ran very wide into the straight was clear at the finish of half a mile in 57 2-ssec, the last three furlongs easily in 40 4-ssec.

Super Corn galloped strongly for the first half ot a mile, but eased right up for the last half, to run the last six furlongs in lmin 30sec. Avalanche (Priddle) jumped two hurdles well. He was accompanied by Master Riverina (Connolly), which fell heavily at the second fence. Private dAngelo (Mein) jumped two fences slowly but safely.
