Lawn Tennis N.Z. PLAYERS AT BOURNEMOUTH
English Hard-Court Championship (N.Z. Press Association^^Copyright) LONDON, April 29 Two Australians won tough matches in the hard courts lawn tennis championships at Bournemouth today. The experienced Australian. Jack Arkinstall, went down 6-0 to Oliver Preen, former British junior champion, in the first set. But the Australian recovered in the second and came out winning, 0-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2. Peter Frankland won one of the longest matches of the day. and won 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, 6-2, against the former British Davis Cup player, Howard Walton. The former New Zealand junior champion, Brian Woolf, went down 6-4, 6-4. 6-0 to the British Davis Cup player Bobby Wilson. * J. W. Gunn, of New Zealand, was beaten by W A. Knight, of Northampton, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. In the women’s singles, Miss R. M. Morrison beat Miss J. M. Young, of Surrey, 6-1, 6-2. Corbett Parker, of New Zealand, and Australia’s Bob Howe both won their first round matches. Parker beat D. B. Hughes, of Wales, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, and Howe beat C. T. Tinting, of Sussex, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0. D. C. Coombe, of New Zealand, was beaten in straight sets by the Canadian Bob Bedard, who won 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. L. Gerrard (New Zealand) beat E. A. Crump (Surrey), 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, in another men’s singles first round game. Other New Zealand firstround wins were:—P. G. Nicholls beat D. R. Collins (Essex), 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Mrs Heather Robson beat Miss A. Hayes (Hampshire), 6-1, 6-3.
Men’s Doubles results were:— G. E. Mudge and B. E. Woolf (New Zealand) beat J. Arkinstall (Australia) and G. R. Smith, 6-4. 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; L. Gerrard (New Zealand) and A. R. Mills beat J. E. Innocent and W. W. Threfall. 6-2, 6-1, 6-3; D. W. Butler and J. W. Gunn (New Zealand) beat J. R. Gee and A. J. Cooper, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2; . Becker and Bob Howe (Australia) beat G. Parker and J. E. Robson (New Zealand), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1; R. Bedard (Canada) and P. G. Nicholls (New Zealand) beat S. D. Listerand and C. C. T. Tinting, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5; B. J. Bucknell and R. E. Griffin beat B. Birmingham (Australia) and L. P. Coni, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
