COLLECTION “FOR PENSIONERS”

Complaint At Sydenham Persons from outside Sydenham had collected money in that district in the name of the Sydenham pensioners, Mr C. J. Sullivan told the annual meeting of the Sydenham Residents and Ratepayers’ Association last evening. He spoke as a member of the committee of the Sydenham Social Security Beneficiaries Friendly Club. Mr Sullivan asked members to help the club in trying to stop outsiders collecting in the name of Sydenham pensioners. The club’s own collector had an official receipt book, he said.

“They are coming here and taking money under false pretences,” he said. His club was a registered pensioners’ club. Mr W. H. Goddard, secretary of the club, said that it was wrong of outside persons to say that they belonged to Sydenham. The club’s official collector “had been knocked back” and told that collectors had called earlier for money to help Sydenham pensioners. Business people in Sydenham had been very good. Encroaching on the other people’s preserves was unfair, he said. The meeting agreed that the committee should report on the matter to the next monthly meeting. Mr L. Ward said that a house was being advertised for sale as suitable for light industry. It was in a non-industrial zone. It was agreed that the agents be advised that it was a residential site and that the Christchurch City Council be asked to clarify the matter with the agents.

The meeting decided that a letter be sent to the reserves department of the Christchurch City Council on the condition of the entrance to Bradford Park from Strickland street, and asking that barriers be erected at the entrances to the park. Officers elected were: president. Mr F. I. Leigh; vice-president, Mr H. J. Corbett; minutes secretaries, Mr L. Ward and Mr F. Hannan; committee, Mr Ward, Mr A. Heveldt, Miss D. Martin. Mrs E. Voller, and Mrs V. Jackson: delegates to Residents Affiliated, Mr Ward, Mr Voller and Mrs Jackson.
