GOLF Miss S. Grigg Leads Women’s Qualifiers

Scoring was high on the first day of the Canterbury women's golf championships at Shirley yesterday. Conditions were excellent and the course was in good order but most players found difficu’t? judging putts on fast and tricky greens. The only player to break 80 tn either of the two qualifying rounds was Miss S. Grigg who returned 77 for the morning round Five more than scratch, it included a birdie four at the 450- - For the firs t 15 holes Miss Grigg was only three more than scratch, but she dropped ?JnJ^ he Jk tW ? strdkes at the sixteenth, the longest hole on the course. In the second round. Miss Grigg returned 84 for a total of 161 to lead the qualifiers. In this round. Miss Grigg dropped three strokes at the seventh, but recovered one of them with a fine birdie three on the eighteenth. Second qualifier is 17-year-old Miss N. Campbell, of Nelson. equal with Miss A Murray ' (Christchurch). Miss Campbell, who plays from a handicap of five, impressed as a golfer with much promise. The first 16 gross scores qualified for the match play today and tomorrow. The next 16, on net scores, will play for the Shirlty trophy, which is decided on handicaps. Two flights will also be played, and non-qualifiers will play a Stableford match today. Good Entries Entries in the championships are good, with 34 entered in the first division and 32 in the second division. The entrants represent nearly all the clubs in Christchurch, and country clubs are also well represented. Players from North Canterbury, South Canterbury, Nelson, Hokitika, Hanmer Springs, and Hastings are competing. The winner of the championship last year, Miss B. Murray, is not defending her title because she is in England. Last year’s runner-up. Mrs G. E. Sinclair, is not competing either. However. Misses S. Grigg and L. Dalzell, who were eliminated in the semifinals last year, are among the top qualifiers in this year’s contest. After Misses Grigg, Campbell and Murray, there was a gap of nine strokes to Mrs L. A. Charles. Other qualifiers for the championship were Misses L. Dalzell, E. M. B. Nutt,, L. Hillis, H. Geaney, Mesdames K. D. Watt. L. A. Watson, C. J. Ward, R. G. Edward. Miss M. Kennard. Mrs F. Williamson. Misses E. White-Parsons and B. Langley. In the handicap section, an outstanding performance was given by Mrs N. H. Rickman. Mrs Rickman. a 21-handicap player, returned two rounds of 98. to give her a net 154. Only Miss Grigg, with 150. was ahead of Mrs Rickman in net scores.
