NEW WHALING SEASON
Lookouts Manned, Ships Ready (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 30. Although the New Zealand whaling season officially opens tomorrow, the main northward migration of whales from the Antarctic to sub-tropic waters in the north is not expected to be t xin until much later in the month. Sighting reports were not made by Great Barrier Island until the third week in May of last year, and although the Tory Channel station made two kills of sperm whales on May 3, it was not until May 20 that the next catches were made. Mr W. W. Gunson, chairman of directors of Hauraki Whaling, Ltd., said today that any continuity in the northward migration was unlikely to develop until well into May. However, both chasers were ready, and the three spotting stations were manned. The northward migration usually lasts from middle or late May until mid-August. The whales return on their southward movement from about mid-Sep-tember until early November. The whaling season officially closes on October 31.
