PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

Prosecution Of Motorists

“I think the traffic authorities should be complimented on enforcing these regulations. Penalties are light at present, but if necessary they will be increased and enforcement will also be increased,” said Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when out of 46 traffic cases brought by the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council 15 related to the use of pedestrian crossings. Twelve motorists were charged with failing to give way to pedestrians on authorised pedestrian crossings; two with overtaking vehicles which had stopped to give way; and a pedestrian was charged with crossing the road diagonally without using a pedestrian crossing—the first case of this kind to be brought in Christchurch.

The pedestrian charged was said to have crossed the road from the Transport Board bus shelter in the Square, walking along the centre of the road and .entering the pedestrian crossing near the Post Office. He pleaded guilty and was fined £l.

Fines of £2 were imposed ob the motorists who failed to yield right of way to pedestrians.
