N.A.T.O. BASE AT CYPRUS
Discussions On ; Facilities ( (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) j (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 30 j The possibility of offering North < Atlantic Treaty facilities in Cyprus is believed to have been one j of the reasons why the Minister < of Defence (Mr Duncan Sandys) visited the island, says, the “Yorkshire Post.” “This would mean that the N.A.T.O. Powers would join Britain in using the island as a base in the interests of the organisation’s defence plans, but this does not mean that a N.A.T.O. political solution for Cyprus is contemplated. “Perhaps, as the United States Navy has been using Malta, Cyprus could be used similarly, but such a proposal is certain to be viewed with suspicion by Greece. "The Greeks have already rejected an offer to use N.A.T.O. good offices in seeing whether reconciliation is possible in the dispute involving the three member countries —Britain, Greece and Turkey. , “When the Atlantic Pact Council meets at Bonn on May 2 it is expected that there will be informal talks about Cyprus, as i the meeting will be attended by , the Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers.”
