REPRESENTATION OF AUSTRALIA
Possible Embassy In Bagdad
(Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 30. Australia is considering abandoning the idea of again using Cairo as its key listening post in the Middle East, it was learned authoritatively today. Until Egypt broke off diplomatic relations with Australia because of Australia’s support of British and French intervention in the Suez Canal dispute, Mr A. R. Cutler, V.C., was the Australian Minister in Cairo. Australia may not seek -the restoration of the diplomatic link with Egypt. Australia’s Minister of External Affairs (Mr R. G. Casey) is an old friend of Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nuri Al Said, and it is believed that Australia is considering an establishment at Bagdad in the belief that representation there would be of greater value in keeping Australia informed, as Bagdad is regarded as the key capital in the Arab world. Egypt is not regarded by Australia as a true Arab nation.
