FIRES IN SHIP Police Question Crew
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 30. Detectives will continue their investigations tomorrow morning on board the immigrant ship Captain Cook into the fires in 12 cabins last evening. Two police constables and two firemen will remain on duty on the ship throughout the night. No arrests had beep- made up to late tonight. Detectives from the wharf police and from the central station spent the whole of today on board the Captain Cook. They interviewed nearly all of the 330 crew and the 50 passengers, who are ending a period of quarantine on board. However, some of the crew have not yet been accounted for. It is expected that these men will be interviewed in the morning. Detectives are still working late tonight collating the masses of information obtained during the day.
All is now quiet aboard the Captain Cook. A ban on shore leave imposed by the police at 9 a.m. was lifted at 3 p.m., and most of the crew went ashore. There was no effort to repair the 12 burnt cabins today. It is understood they will be left untouched till the ship reaches London.
The Captain Cook’s departure on Monday is not likely to be held up. The ship will not take on passengers till she reaches Bermuda. It is believed her next trip from Britain will be to Christmas Island, after the British bomb tests.
