POWER SUPPLY CONFERENCE
City Delegation Discussed
“The time has come when we have to face up to this conference issue.” said Cr. H. P Smith to the City Council last evening when he opposed a proposal to send a junior engineer of the Municipal Electricity Department to the conference of the New Zealand Electrical Supply Authorities’ Engineers’ Association in Rotorua in October “for the purpose of gaining experienc .” “Hear, hear." said Cr. M. B Howard M.P., several times while Cr Smith was speakinjHe had only agreed to two councillors attending because there were important subjects—the new price for bulk ele tricity and the gas merger—to be discussed, Cr. Smith said. “This country is becoming conference happy," he continued. “We have a duty to see that the council is adequately represented. It is quite unnecessary for a junior engineer to go to find what the conference is about “I am not concerned about the man involved, but with the principle. “If we go on as we are, I would not be surprised if some day we have a conference of ‘conferees' to find out what happens at conferences.” Cr. G. Manning said the recommendation that the engineer should attend was made by the engineer-manager (Mr G. H. Battersby). The engineers met separately and there was a great dec’ of benefit in the contacts gained and the information gained from technical papers. Cr. Smith’s amendment was lost. Delegates to the Supply Authorities’ Association conference and technical conferences will be Crs. L G. Amos, chairman of the electricity committee. Cr. W. J Cowles. Mr Battersby. the secretary (Mr J. C. Denford) and a junior engineer. The council agreed to sponsor a remit that future conferences of the association be held biennially instead of annually.
