LOUDSPEAKER FOR USE IN TRAFFIC
Portable Units For Officers
A new type of portable loudspeaker which can be carried on the shoulders of traffic officers will be on trial in Christchurch today. Already in use in Wellington, the loudspeakers can be carried on the shoulders of the officer to any place where traffic is congested, and where it would be impossible to manoeuvre a patrol car fitted with loudspeakers. This afternoon, the new apparatus will be tested at the gates to Lancaster Park, where congestion may result before and after the South Island All Black trial. The advantages of the portable loudspeaker are many. At present, traffic officers can only use a patrol car when they wish to guide traffic by a sound system, and the officer’s words can only be heard from the direction in which the car is facing. If the trial this afternoon is satisfactory, the City Council may purchase several of the sets for use in the city.
