AUSTRALIAN TOUR
Receipts Total £22,310 The gate takings during the Australian tour of New Zealand totalled £20,930, and Minor Association guarantees and broadcasting fees brought the total income for the tour to £22,310, said the secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council (Mr E. E. Luttrell) to yesterday’s meeting of the Council’s Board of Control. An interim budget made them confident that expenses for the tour had been covered and that a profit would be made, said the chairman (Mr J. L. Kerr). What the profit would be they would not know until, all the returns were received from those associations which had conducted matches. There seemed to be some dissatisfaction among the Minor Associations about how the guarantees had been, fixed, said Mr I. M. Hamilton. South Canterbury had made a considerable loss, for although the gate had been insured, rain had got under the covers and the match had ended in one day. There was no set formula for arriving at guarantees, said Mr Kerr. In the past minor associations badly placed had been met. It was said that other minor associations’ games had been affected by rain. Mr Kerr said that a system by which everyone came into a pool could be examined in the future.
Mr Kerr said he felt it was a very happy tour. The manager (Mr J. E. Norton) and the captain, I. D. Craig, had been most cooperative, and he felt they bad done an immense amount for New Zealand cricket.
“Our players in the tests performed very creditably, when we look at the over-all picture,” said Mr Kerr. “However, our batsmen seem to have lost the art of using their feet against slow bowling. It may be a matter they can remedy before next season. That seemed to be our weakness, as I saw it during the season.”
University Council Request
The New Zealand Cricket Council's Board of Control, at its meeting yesterday, received a letter from the New Zealand University Cricket Council asking that favourable consideration be given to the inclusion of a New Zealand University match when itineraries were being prepared for tours of New Zealand. The council referred to the University teams’ record in recent matches against first-class teams. The board received the letter.
The board decided to advise the Thames Valley association that it was proposed to include the area of Maramarua in the proposed new Franklin minor association, and to ask for Thames Valley’s views. An invitation from Mr J. S. White for a New Zealand Colts’ team to tour northern New South Wales will be discussed when the board’s executive meets the Central Brabin Shield tournament committee.
