BUTTER PRICES IN BRITAIN
Market Steady At Higher Level (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, April 28. The rise in the price of New Zealand butter last week levelled off at 276 s per cwt—the highest figure reached since December. The market is reported as firm, although demand was quiet at the end of a week which had seen a rise of 16s. Consumption is reported to be rising steadily after a period of retail sales at 2s 6d per lb. The increase to 2s 7d last week is not expected to have much effect. Some traders think the New Zealand price may remain about the present level for some time. Continental production during May and June will be closely watched. If there is no drought present forecasts are that production may be heavy in Denmark, Holland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, as well as in Western Germany. This would mean the Germans would be temporarily self-suffi-cient, while the other Continental countries would send their surplus supplies to Britain and inevitably affect prices.
