GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL
Plans For Extensive Alterations
Provisionary plans for extensive alterations at Christchurch Girls’ High School, and a letter explaining the plans, were received at a meeting of the school’s board of Governors last evening. The proposed alterations include changes in a number of classrooms, wall-desks with book-cases above them in the staff rooms, the inclusion of a library suite in the hall, changes in the existing sickroom, and provision for a new sick-room.
The plans also provide for bringing the school’s fire precautions up-to-date by new smokestop doors. The letter asked the board to have the plans examined by its own architect, and to inform the Education Department of any radical changes suggested. “That provides everything but the assembly hall,” said the headmistress (Miss R. F. C. Tyndall). “But the staff is not keen on the idea of wall desks. I asked staff members to vote, and 11 voted for the alterations and 13 voted for no change. I don’t know what to do about that.”
The board decided to adopt the plans subject to discussion with an architect.
Officers and committees were elected as follows: — Chairman, Mrs C. H. Perkins; deputy-chairman, Mr J. E. Milner; secretary, Mr P. J. Halligan; appointments committee, Dr. P. J. Lawrence, Mesdames G. G. Lockwood and Perkins, and Miss H. Samuel; hostel committee, Mesdames M. L. Beauchamp and Lockwood, Misses O. L. Eslick, R. F. C. Tyndall, and Mr J. E. Miller.
“Miraculous” Buffalo.—A water buffalo in the Vietnamese village of My Tho raises its head to the rising sun each day and produces a flow of “miraculous spittle” which cures tuberculosis and paralysis, according to an issue of the Saigon newspaper “Boui Sang” received in Paris today. Peasants have paid the buffalo’s owner about £lOOO in four months for treatment. —Paris, April 27.
