Mr Jrihtmstoiri asked h©>w many <, history students be-:h yemd stage I arid hew many them were actual ©r teachers? 1 ; Professor Garrett said English,: classes might give some idea <te 1 . relative numbers. Alt stage 1 there were about at stage Hj about, m at stage IH about 35,. and at the honours stage about. |An alternative course woula in-; i| volve about eight hours more. ; | leaching weekly. ; This discussion should not bej
confined solelly to history, saidi s the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan.; 4 Could the Professorial Board consider the issue as it affected all'? j subjects? Mr Leggat said he would prefer;' 1 tost, his amendment be confined'" to history. The discussion had. gone much wider than he in-i tended; but other subjects at j stage I were "fairly rounded”giving a general conception off ■ their whole content. Dr. Llewellyn mentioned that ; ' course changes would be submit-; ■ led to the curriculum committee on June 20 and some weeks be-, ; fore then they had to be referred [to other colleges. "If these changes are sound. Het us put them through; but if, there are good reasons why wej S should not. we should not be un-|i jduly influenced by any such: , urgency," said the chairman of j ' • the council tMr D. W. Bain)d “There have been some very] honest doubts expressed for those ! i who want to take stage I only. Im i these changes do prejudice their? future, we should refer the matter:’ back. It would be ineffectual to| approve these prescriptions and-
then have another motion suggesting an alternative course. 1 don't think the professor of his-' tory or any other should feel rebuffed by any such action." The amendment, referring the proposals back to the Professorial: Board with a statement that while the council did not wish to decline approval, it suggested investigation of an alternative course for those wanting stage I history only, was carried by a fairly close vote on the voices. When Mr Bain remarked on the procedure by which this issue now came before the council, Dr. Llewellyn said that academic staff; had been giving more detailed prescriptions in an endeavour to be more helpful to students, “but they are laying themselves open to what has happened today.’* Philosophy and Engineering
New prescriptions in philosophy were approved with little discussion. When questioned about an apparent increasing bias on logic, the Rector said Professor A. N. Prior deemed the changes necessary to keep in line with trends he had recently observed overseas. The council also approved the introduction of applied mathematics II for the bachelor’s degree in arts and science and amended regulations covering composite engineering qualifications.
Notifiable Diseases.—Three cases of tuberculosis were, the only notifiable diseases reported in the Christchurch-Greymouth health district last week, according to information given by the medical officer of health tDr. A. Douglas) yesterday. A
