Rail-Car Driver Commended
To commend the action of Mr Max Wilson when the rail-car of which he was driver got out of control in the Otira tunnel recently, the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Locomotive Drivers’. Firemen’s, and f Cleaners’ Association held a special meeting at the Linwood depot. Mr Wilson was commended for his efforts to regain control of the rail-car, particularly in climbing from one rail-car unit to the other in order to apply more brakes. “But for h Mr Wilson’s courageous action, his workmates consider the outcome of the runaway would have been much more serious,” said the branch secretary (Mr W. A. Mason), in a statement yesterday. Rosewall Beats Gonzales.—Ken Rosewall (Australia) battled from behind to defeat Pancho Gonzales, 2-6, 6-3, 9-7 today on their southern tour. In the preliminary singles match, Pancho Segura beate Dinny Pails (Australia), 9-7. —Atlanta, April 28.
