Hockey USE OF POLO GROUNDS
Concentration Of Games Whether hockey matches should be concentrated at the Polo grounds at Hagley Park or dispersed among other grounds was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s management committee last evening.
The chairman of the grounds committee (Mr E. Wicks) said the general feeling of the committee several meetings ago was in favour of play on as many different grounds as possible. For umpires it would be far easier to have 45 games played at the Polo grounds. Mr T. Armstrong said the association wanted as many games as possible to be played on the Polo grounds. “There are* some grounds there that are hardly being used, and even if they are not particularly good, there is a chance that the City Council may take them away from us if we don’t use them. We are spending a lot of money on the Polo grounds and we ought to be using them to the full,” he said. The matter of where Saturday matches should be played was referred to the grounds committee.
A complaint from the Canterbury Football Association that hockey players were using an unofficial cycle track in Hagley Park across a soccer ground was received by the committee.
The secretary of the Canterbury Football Association (Mr T. McGuigan) said the track was used by hockey players going to and from the Polo grounds, and this created a hazard to soccer players using the grourid. The chairman (Mr G. Graham) said the association could only warn its clubs in a circular against using the track. It was up to the City Council, he said, to enforce the by-laws in the park. COMPETITION FOR SCHOOLBOYS Record Entries A record entry of teams in the schoolboys’ competition but very few umpires available for these matches was shown in the report of the Canterbury Junior Hockey Association, presented to a meeting of the senior association’s management committee last evening. The chairman of the junior association , (Mr T. .Roberts) said 122 schoolboys’ teams would be playing this season. Opening day for primary schools’ games was May 4, he said, and 39 teams, representing 21 schools, would play.. This was three teams and four schools more than last season. “The secondary schools’ competition will begin on May 1, and in this section 67 teams will represent 10 schools,” said Mr Taylor. “Nine grades have been established, and a new entry this year comes from the Shirley Boys’ High school. “With the large number of entries in schoolboys’ grades this season, we are going to need a very large number of grounds, and we will face a shortage of umpires,” said Mr Taylor. “The secondary schools’ tournament will be held in the first week of the August holidays, and 16 to 20 teams are entered,” he said. Rough Play By Team After a complaint of rough play and bad behaviour by members of the third grade Beckenham hockey team, the management committee of the CanterburyHockey Association, will write to the Beckenham club. The complaint arose from a match which the team played against a Linwood High School team two weeks ago.
After a long discussion in committee, the meeting decided to write to the club bringing the complaint to its notice and expressing disfavour of rough play and bad behaviour on the hockey field. A member of the New Brighton senior second division team, H Goodland, has been suspended for one Saturday. Notice of his suspension was contained in a judicial committee report to the meeting.
Goodland had caused obstruction in the match against Selwyn. and in the judicial committee’s opinion, the referee acted correctly in ordering him from the field, said the chairman (Mr G. Graham).
