Miss Jennifer Warren, a graduate of Canterbury University College, has been appointed research assistant to Professor Momigliano, professor of ancient history, University College, London University, for the year 1957-58. “What’s the Date?” was the
title of a talk given by Professor N. C. Phillips, in which he discussed the nature and dating of historical documents, at a meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society on Saturday evening. Professor Phillips holds the chair of history and political science at Canterbury University College. The president (Mr D. J. Hewitt) welcomed several new members and the artists for the evening. About 80 attended. Items were given by Miss Angela Connal (pianoforte solos) and Mrs Beatrice Crocker (contralto solos). The accompanist was Mrs W. E. Olds.
A cocktail party and buffet dinner to mark the reopening of the service between New Zealand and Indonesia and Malaya was held on Saturday evening by the Dutch Royal Interocean Lines on board the motor vessel Roggeveen. now on its first visit to Lyttelton. Guests included representatives of Lyttelton harbour and port organisations and importing and exporting firms. They were received by Mr A. van Bochore. general manager for Australia and New Zealand of the Royal Interocean Lines, and Captain W. Vader, master of the Roggeveen.
The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand (the Rt. Rev. J. M. McKenzie) gave a talk on the church’s work among the Maori people at a recent meeting of the Christchurch Presbyterial Association, attended by representatives of all branches of the association. Mr Crozier, who recently visited the church’s overseas missions, spoke on the problems facing these young congregations. World Membership Day will be observed by the Christchurch branch of the Y.W.C.A. on May 1 by a special meeting and a special programme. The theme chosen by the World Y.W.C.A. this year is “My Place in Family Life Today,” and will be discussed by a panel of speakers, compered by the president of the Christchurch branch, Miss C. E. Robinson. She will be assisted by Mrs I. L. Holmes, Mrs R. H. Cranfield, Dr. P. J. Lawrence and Mr L. W. Tye. Mrs I. Wilson presided at the April meeting of tl.e Christchurch Central Women’s Christian Temperance Union held recently. Greetings were sent to Miss G. Musgrove and Mrs Ford, who are sick. Mrs H. G. Brown led devotions. Mrs Angus spoke on the recent meeting of the National Council of Women. Mrs I. Wilson outlined recent addresess she had heard on the United Nations. Arrangements were made for the birthday party to be held in May. Mrs C. A. A. Smith presided at
the April meeting of the Papanui Townswomen’s Guild and welcomed three new members. An address on colour in the home was given by Miss Ann Stewart Arrangements were made for a “bring and buy” and social afternoon at the next meeting. - Mrs R. M. Rule presided at the annual meeting of the Spreydon branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Officers were elected as follows: president, Mrs G. Broadhead; vice-presidents, Mesdames N. Hill and T. Beer; secretary-treasurer, Mrs A. Ferguson; advisory member, Mrs O. Irwin; delegates to the provincial executive, Mesdames Broadhead. A. Ferguson and N. Hill; committee, Mesdames W. Wiseman. Connor, Pratley, Manning, Hogsden, Irwin, Poff, Gilbert and Munro; reporter, Mrs O. Irwin; competition steward, Mrs W. Wiseman. In an address entitled “Third Class East,” Mrs D. Meherne discussed devastated areas in Europe and India at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club. Mrs Meherne recently spent four years overseas. The president (Mrs W. G. Jenkins) presented her with a bouquet of flowers.
