20 Fathers Accompany Wolf Cubs On Bridle Path Trek
Ninety wolf cubs climbed the Bridle Path from Lyttelton to Heathcote on Saturday afternoon. The cubs represented the Raupo district, which includes, St. Martins, Opawa, Woolston, Heathcote, Lyttelton, Diamond Harbour, and Akaroa areas. The objects of the outing were explained by the district cub master (Miss J. Morris), “We asked the boys to bring their fathers so as to give them an interest in what their sons were doing.” More than 20 fathers accompanied their sons over the Bridle Path. The rally was held in the Heathcote Domain where a full-scale scavenger hunt was held. The boys had to find matchsticks, fourleaf clovers, rusty nails, and toffee papers—none of which were previously hidden.
“If they can’t fi- d what they are looking for, they’ll make it,” said Miss Ruth Ogilvie, leader of the Heathcote group. Her predictions were proved correct when some of the “four’Teaf clover- were examined at closer quarters. However, Mr L. W. Claridge and his son Robert found a genuine five-leaf clover. The biggest surprise of all was when an eight-year-old cub presented his leader with two bottles of beer which he had found under a bush during the hunt. After a short discussion, the bottles were returned—unopened! In an address to the fathers, Mr D. O. Watson, who is District Commissioner to the Raupo local association, said: “The main aim of cubbing, is to lay the foundations for a balanced personality—mentally and physically.” ]
