Cycling ROAD RACING SEASON

25-Mile Title To K. Shadwell

The first championship of the cycling road racing season was held on Saturday at Leeston. when the Leeston Cycling and Atheltic Club conducted the 25-mile North Canterbury championship, which was won by K. Shadwell. The championship attracted 64 entries. The race was run round a block course, which had to be traversed twice. The scratch men were giving the limit men 10 minutes’ start. Shadwell, from the break mark, rode solidly throughout the race to get up on the scratch men and take fastest time and the championship Shadwell’s 4’ me ot 58min 4O.4sec. considering the conditions, was excellent, and if he can maintain his present form he should record some very fast times. C. Gluiestein (Tinwald) is a brilliant junior rider and. in covering the distance in 62min lOsec, won the iunior championship. Gluiestein has ridden with great distance on the road in South Canterburv, and much can be expected from him. G. Arthur (Kaikoura). the winner rode a very determined race. Into the head wind in the final sprint, he had too much pace for the othe r three riders who were with him. He* was strongly challenged by D. Houghton. a limit rider, who filled second place. M. Ineson (Tinwald) just managed to hold off the veteran, A Howison, for third place. Abbreviations used in the results are: Kaikoura <K.), Christchurch (C.). Tinwald (T.). The results were:—G. Peter Brotherton, captain of last year’s British Olympic cycling team, yesterday won one of Australia’s major professional races, the £lOOO Golden Mile wheel race at Bendigo. Brotherton, who stayed in Australia and turned professional after the Games, recorded a time of Imin 50.8 sec, the fastest mile ever recorded in Australia. In drizzling rain; Brotherton beat the favourite, Russell Mockridge, with Jim Luttrell third.
