A Veteran’s Complaint

Sir, —I would like to voice my indignation at the action of many self-centred and over-cautious motorists on Anzac night who, possibly excusing themselves by the A.A. injunction, ignored signals for a lift by a bemedalled and non-drinking veteran returning northwards on the main highway after attending the Gallipoli reunion in Dunedin. One wonders if, even on Anzac Day, goodwill is running out for those who risked everything over a period of years, compared with which the “risk” attached to helping a veteran on the road is ludicrous. As an A.A. member, I am sure that body would not approve such actions.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED. April 27, 1957.
