CRAYFISH EXPORTS TO U.S.
Legislation “Threat” To N.Z. Industry
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 28.
Five men from Otago and Southland are understood to be leaving for the United States soon to investigate a “threat” against New Zealand’s rich crayfish industry. Their main purpose is to examine two Bills which are before the Senate. These aim at restricting the import into America of crayfish. New Zealand exports about 3,500,0001 b of crayfish a year, and most of this comes from the West Coast and Stewart Island grounds. While the full implications of the bills are not known, it seems that their passage through the Senate would be a blow to the New Zealand industry.
