Eight Teams Play Qn Hard Courts
The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter tennis competition began on the hard courts at Wilding Park on Saturday for the first time for several years. Waimairi. North Linwood, Woolston, and Avonside won their matches. Results:—
Opawa v. Waimairi.—Doubles: N. Norden and T. Jackson beat W Thom and J. Beddis, 6-2, 6-3; N. Barr and M. Crozier lost to R. Woods and A. Knights, 2-6, 2-6. Singles: Jackson beat Beddis. 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; Barr lost to Wood, 7-9, 4-6; Crozier lost to Knight. 4-6, 2-6; Norden lost to Thom, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6. Waimairi won by 4 matches to 2. North Linwood v. Elmwood.— Singles (North Linwood names first): T. Harneiss beat G. W. Goodwin, 6-3. 6-4; J. Beatty beat D. A. Britten. 6-1, 6-1; B. Prisk lost to L. Martin, 2-6, 6-4, 0-6; J. Ewart lost to B. Sullivan, 1-6, 2-6. Doubles: Harneiss and Beatty beat Goodwin and Martin, 6-2, 6-1; Prisk and Ewart lost to Britten and Sullivan, 0-6, 1-6. North Linwood won by 7 sets to 6. Woolston v. Ellesmere.—Doubles: D. Adair and B. Lane beat I. Jones and A. Watkins, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4; J. Logan and D. Forbes beat D. Walklin and R. McGill, 7-5, 7-9, 6-1. Singles: Adair beat Jones, 6-3, 6-2; Forbes beat McGill, 6-1, 6-1; Lane beat Watkins, 6-3, 6-1; J. Logie beat D. Walklin, 7-5, 6-3. Woolston won by 6 matches to 0. Avonside v. Cathedral.—Singles: Horgan beat T. Gibson. 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; R. Southam beat J. Gilmore, 6-0, 6-4; F. Commons beat F. Rogal, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4; J. Southam beat M. Hobby, 6-0, 6-1. Doubles: Horgan and Commons beat Gibson and Gilmore, 6-4, 6-4; Southam and Southam beat Rogal Sand Hobby, 6-4, 6-2. Avonside won by 6 matches to 0. EASTER TOURNEY FINALS The Easter tournament conducted by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was completed on Saturday morning with the playing of the three remaining finals matches. The top seeds in the mixed doubles, W. Pritchard and Miss L Luxton, beat the second seeded pair, R. Minson and Miss A. Snow, after losing the second set. Results:— Mixed Doubles.—W. Pritchard and Miss L. Luxton beat R. Minson and Miss A. Snow, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Boys’ Singles.—D. Jamieson beat G. Moss, 9-3. Boys’ Doubles.—Moss and Jamieson beat B. R. Judge and L. Walpole, 9-4. Hoad Beaten At Naples (N.Z. Press Association Copyright) NAPLES, April 27. Lew Hoad (Australia) was eliminated from the men’s singles of the Naples international tennis tournament today by the Chilean Davis Cup player, Luis Ayala, in a hardfought semi-final. Ayala won. 8-6. 6-3. Though Ayala is a world ranking player, his win was the biggest upset of the season so far. In the final tomorrow he will meet Orlando Sirola, the giant Italian Davis Cup player, who beat the American, Hugh Stewart, 4-6, 7-5, 9-7, today. The American Associated Press said that Hoad told reporters later: ‘My right arm, which I strained some time ago, started to ache again and I just could not use it. . . Also, I have not been playing for three months, and it takes time to get into top form again.” Hoad said that he would not play in a tournament at Bournemouth. England, next week, "unless I feel I have recovered perfectly.”
