Peking Alerts Chinese On Radio-Activity

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, April 27. Peking Radio has broadcast two warnings that the atmosphere over a large area of North, North-east and North-west China was charged with high radio-activity, “The Times” Hong Kong correspondent reported today.

The warning, in Chinese, was given by the Chinese Minister of Health, Madame Li Teh-Chuan. The announcement did not disclose the amount of radio-activity, but said that it originated in Siberia. “The Times” correspondent said that the radio-activity must have been exceptional to have given rise to such a warning.

There has been a series of atomic or nuclear explosions in Russia recently. The biggest explosion of the series was on April 16. The warning told Chinese to wash fruit and vegetables in boiling water before eating them, to cover wells and to bury fruit and vegetables to protect them from the radio-activity. Neither the English or Chinese services of the New China News Agency nor any of the proCommunist newspapers in Hong Kong carried the warning, “The Times” said.

(Rec. 10 p.m.) TOKYO, April 27. The Foreign Office said that the Japanese Government today instructed its acting Ambassador in Washington, Mr Takezo Shimoda, to request the United States Government to suspend its series of nuclear tests in Nevada this May. The Japanese Government recently said that it was opposed to nuclear tests within the territory of the testing country on the grounds that there could be no assurance the tests would not bring harmful effects through fall-outs to other countries and peoples.
