Mr Strydom’s Refusal
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 26
Fears that he might have to sit at the same table as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. the African Prime Minister of Ghana, are believed to be behind the refusal of the South African Prime Minister (Mr J. Strydom) to attend the conference of Commonwealth Prime Ministers in June, says the “Daily Telegraph” Cape Town correspondent.
Mr Strydom’s newspaper. "Transvaier," has said that “purely personal reasons” prevented Mr Strydom’s attendance. The “Daily Telegraph’s” correspondent says that there have long been reports that the Prime Minister is a sick man, and he is certainly subject to much anxiety owing to dissent among his Ministers. But, on the whole, the fear that he might figure in the same photograph a year before a general election with an African, who said recently that he would like to smash apartheid, is the likeliest reason for his decision.
