SUCCESS OF THE AYRSHIRE
The Ayrshire breed is rapidly collecting trophy after trophy in Britain. In 1956 the Coronation Challenge Cup Award for the best team of six cows, on inspection only, was won in London by Ayrshires for the fourth time in succession; for the second year running they have taken the Bledisloe Trophy; and at the Royal Ulster Dairy Show, held in Belfast, the Ayrshire is the only breed to have won the British Oil and Cake Mills Team championship bowl since it was first introduced two years ago. Since October, 1955, Ayrshire cows have won every inter-breed competition at national dairy and summer shows in the United Kingdom, and in addition to being placed first on inspection in these, the Ayrshire team has gone in to the judging ring at each show with a clear lead of milk production points over the next highest rival breed. Other marked successes have been achieved at the Royal Highland Show, at Inverness, and at the Royal Show at Newcastle.
Taste is Fickle.—The present demand for the small joint may not continue indefinitely. Mr W. Thomson, head of the Duthie experimental stock farm of the Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, told farmers at Kelso in Scotland: “Public taste is fickle and largely depends on what is in the purse. Though these small and relatively dear joints may be most in demand today, who knows when the larger and cheaper joint will be more popular—as they are in certain areas even today.’’
