INTER-PROVINCIAL ROWING

An unforeseen happening with unfortunate results robbed the inter-provincial eight-oared rowing championship, held last weekend on the Dunedin harbour, of much of its interest.

The Auckland eight appeared to have the race comfortably in hand with two and a half of the three-mile course completed, but then had the misfortune to strike a channel buoy, which damaged their boat to such an extent that they could not continue. The Otago eight, which at the time was trailing Auckland by some three lengths, then went on to win the race by a comfortable two lengths margin over Marlborough, with Canterbury filling the third placing.

Auckland’s misfortune was the greater since the crew clearly demonstrated its superiority in blade work and fitness over all the other competitors. An outstanding feature of this crew was the stroking of the 17-year-old Watkinson. Otago disappointed the many who were looking for a repetition of the last year’s performance at the Olympic trials at Picton.

The Canterbury crew was also disappointing to the many Canterbury supporters who travelled to Dunedin. Although fit and managing to maintain a consistent stroking of 35 strokes to the minute, the crew could gain no run from their boat, and gave an. impression of a lack of slide control. However, a number of the crew are young, and have many, years of active rowing before them. The experience in training and in racing will be of value to those oarsmen, and the province will be the richer in’ the future.
