Blood Transfusion Work Increased
Voluntary blood donors gave 7532 blood donations last year of which 5604 were issued for transfusion, according to a summary drawn up by the North Canterbury Blood Transfusion service. This was an increase of 2061 donations on the previous year and 1237 more donations were issued. Since 1951, when there were 2406 donations, the number has increased by 5126 and the number of donations issued, by 4055. The number of blood donations issued last year to the various hospitals, with the number for 1955 in parenthesis, was: Christchurch 4061 (3241), Sanatorium 345 (212); Burwood 109 (81); Essex 20 (10); St. George’s
368 (331), Calvary 432 (311); Limes 54 (38), St. Helens 182 (121). The number of donors on the service’s panel at the end of March was 4207 and during the year 3860 persons gave blood, 873 more than in the previous year. I
