Cinema Screens
Sir,—In recent months many cinemas have been equipped with new screens, which appear to be intermediate in shape between the conventional and the new wide ratio. I have noticed that when normal-frame films are shown on these screens there is a great loss of picture at top and bottom. Sometimes this is so great as to cause unintelligibility especially in the case of titles. Although it Is less obvious it seems probable that when wide ratio films are shown, there will be loss of picture at the sides. Perhaps some representative of the industry would care to comment.—Yours, etc., O. D. JAMES. April 23, 1957. [There would be a slight loss of “frame” at top and bottom only in cases where normal screen films were projected on to wide screens. This would occur at times in the projection of newsreels, featurettes, and old films which were being revived, a spokesman for the industry said when asked to comment on this letter.]
