NEW THEATRE IN SPREYDON
Licence Granted To Company The theatre licensing officer (Mr H. L. E. Peryman) of the Department of Internal Affairs has granted Suburban Cinemas, Ltd., a licence to build a picture theatre in Barrington street next Jo Spreydon Public Library. The licence is the first of its kind to be issued in Christchurch since the Century Theatre was built in 1939. It was hoped to begin building the theatre in about two months’ time, said the secretary of the company (Mr M. F. Foate) yesterday. He said it would probably open by the end of the year. The name of the theatre has not yet been decided, but “Vogue” has been suggested. Intended to serve residents of the Spreydon, Cashmere and Hoon Hay areas, the theatre will show good quality second-run films with probably about 75 programmes a year—usually two changes each week. Mr Foate said the new theatre would have a very attractive facade and entrance with a modern confectionery bar incorporated in the foyer. There would be seating for 200 in the circle and 350 in the stalls. Very modern technical equipment would be installed and with the new wide screen the entire cost of building and equipping the theatre would be about £lB,OOO. A great deal of interest in the proposal had been showi/ by residents in the area, Mr Foate said. There had been a very favourable response when a survey was taken recently and he had many inquiries in the last few weeks.
