In 17 days—from April 7 to April 23—there were eight deaths from road accidents in the district covered by the motor accident branch of the Christchurch Central Police Station. An officer of the branch said yesterday that he could not remember a similar period when there had been so many killed on the roads in the area. On April 7 two persons were killed when a car skidded in shingle on a road in the Mount Grey district and rolled down a 200 ft bank. A cyclist died after a collision with a truck at the corner of Helmores lane and Harper avenue on April 9. A motorist died after his car collided with a power pole in Riccarton road on April 10. Five days later, on April 15, a woman cyclist was killed in a collision with a truck at the corner of Latimer square and Hereford street. A cyclist died after a collision with a car at the intersection of Yaldhurst and Avonhead roads on April 18. On April 19 a man was killed in a collision between two cars at the corner of Bethels and Seiwyn roads near the Burnham Military Camp. The eighth death was the result of a collision between a cyclist and a car at the intersection of Buckleys road and Dacre street on Tuesday.
