“Church” Clause In Race Bill
(Rec. 11 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, April 26. The controversial “church” clause in the South African Native Laws Amendment Bill, in its amended form, was adopted in the Assembly last night by 65 votes to 41 after a stormy debate. The clause provides that the Ministry of Native Affairs may prohibit Africans from attending church services in white areas if their presence is considered a nuisance. The Minister of Native Affairs, Dr. H. Verwoerd, replying to his critics in the debate, said that there was no widespread opposition to the bill among members of the public, as the Opposition had alleged.
