Gross Takings Of Nearly £BOOO

The gross takings of the Christchurch Operatic Society's production, "Wedding in Paris,” were almost £BOOO. This is reported to be a record for an amateur show in Christchurch, and is believed to be also a record for New Zealand. Before the production, expense, were estimated to be about £9OOO, the principal items, being royalties of £9OO and rent of £6OO. “The society took a risk in putting on such an expensive show,

particularly as the takings in the three previous years had been £3500, £3900. and £3200,” said Mr A. J. Bell, secretary of ''the society. "We are grateful for the public support which has enabled us to recoup previous losses.” said Mr Bell. “I have had letters froapeople who saw the London production and judged ours as being of a higher standard.” The attendance was 20,000.
