CARS DIVERTED FROM SQUARE
Minor Congestion Last Evening
Taxis and buses were the only vehicles permitted to enter Cathedral square last evening. City Council traffic inspectors were stationed at the four entrances, and all reported that, on the whole, motorists were patient and obedient. The diversion was caused by the road-sealing at the Bank of New Zealand corner. ' The biggest traffic jam occurred soon after 7.30 p.m. at the intersection of Cashel and High streets, when a car stalled and could not be started. Within minutes, many cars were stoppei, and the congestion was not cleared for more than five minutes. “In my opinion, many motorists pay little attention to their driving,” -said Traffic Officer H. J. Hammett, who was on duty at the corner of High and Cashel streets. He was commenting on the number of drivers who attempted to pass the detour notice in High street. The notice is printed in Bin letters, with a 20in red arrow at the bottom. “Ono motorist had the audacity to shift a hurdle,” said Traffic Officer Hammett. “He soon replaced it, though!” While Traffic Officer Hammett’s back was turned, a reporter saw five cars pass the detour sign. However, the drivers were still prevented from entering the square, because there was another officer at the Hereford street intersection.
