LICE CONTROL IN SHEEP

Dusting May Be Allowed (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 26. The Acting Minister of Agriculture (Mr S. W. Smith) said today that the Government was considering allowing sheepfarmers to dust tneir sheep with insecticides as an alternative to dipping. The Department of Agriculture was conducting experiments to see how effective dusting with insecticides such as dieldrin and aldrin was for controlling lice and keds. The Government’s decision would depend on the result of these experiments.

Mr Smith said strong representations had been made to him to accept the new method of combating parasites, already tried out by many sheepfarmers, instead of insisting on dipping as required by the Stock Act. “Because of the encouraging reports of the efficacy of the new method, I am prepared, in the meantime, not to insist that sheep already dusted this season be also dipped,” said the Minister. He added, however, that it was too early to say that the dust treatment could be accepted as an effective one.
